To the people of Bahia, the Church of Bomfim is the largest center of Catholic faith, and those who, by syncretism, have in place the maximum point of religion. Images of Our Lord of Bonfim and Our Lady's Guide to Portugal came from Bahia, through the Portuguese navy Captain Theodozio Rodrigues de Faria, arriving on 18 April 1745, a Sunday of Easter and are housed in the Church Penha, built at the tip of the peninsula itapagipana until 1754. The image of Our Lord of Bonfim was brought because of a promise made by the master-of-sea-and-war Portuguese navy, Theodózio Rodrigues de Faria, who promised during a strong storm that would survive for Brazil's image their devotion. Thus, on April 18, 1745, replica of the existing representation of the saint was brought from Setúbal Setúbal, homeland of the capital, and sheltered in Penha Church until the end of the construction of the Church of the Senhor do Bonfim. In 1754, the inside of the Church of the Senhor do Bonfim was completed and the images transferred to it in procession, where solemn mass was celebrated. The lighting was done by lamps until in June 1862 was introduced to public lighting, with lamps made of carbon dioxide. The electrical installations in 1902 were held until 1998, when the church was restored. The washing of the church began in 1773, when members of the "brotherhood of the devout laity" the slaves forced to wash the church as part of preparations for the feast of the Lord of Bonfim, the second Sunday of January, after the Epiphany. Over time, followers of Candomblé began to identify with the Lord of Bonfim Oxalá. The Archdiocese of Salvador, then washing prohibited inside the temple and moved the ritual for the stairs and plaza. During the traditional washing of the church doors remain closed during the wash - the Bahia pour water on the steps and in the churchyard, to the sound of African songs and ringtones [1]. It is one of the most traditional Catholic churches in the city, dedicated to the Senhor do Bonfim, Bahia and patron of the symbol of religious syncretism in Bahia It was built from 1745, year in which the images came from the Lord Jesus do Bonfim and Nossa Senhora da Guia, brought by the Portuguese captain Theodózio Rodrigues de Faria, was completed in 1772. In 1923, by reason of the celebrations for the Independence of Bahia, was composed the anthem to the Lord of Bonfim, authored the poet Arthur de Salles and João Antônio Wanderley. This song became very popular in Bahia until the present day.
